Jennifer Towner
Trying to bridge the gap between life and art all the while living the mundane life of a 40-something year old single woman is the catalyst for Jennifer Towner’s work. By working through her own obsessions, insecurities and dreams, Towner reveals the admiring, awkward and sometime vulgar side of human nature as she highlights the struggles to define her identity.
In her most recent work, Towner uses a variety of readily available social media networks and gallery performances to chronicle her desires to become a reality television star.
In the project I Heart Ann, Towner examines celebrities and those who worship them. In hopes of obtaining fame herself, she made daily early morning treks to the Today Show, a nationally televised morning news program, to proclaim her worship of newswoman Ann Curry. Hand made signs strategically placed to be seen on the air announced her admiration of Curry. Through this daily act, Towner created her own subset of fans. A collection of give-aways, photos of herself on television and a daily blog captured both her experience as a fan and a pseudo-celebrity.
Whether she is creating monuments in homage to food, coping with her inability to throw recyclables away by transforming them into complex installations or mapping her sex life through satellite photos, Towner’s work tells stories through objects, installations and easily accessible means of technology.
Her hope is to create work that resonates with the everyday viewer as she navigates through her own life and obsessions.
