Anne’s current work centers on the formation of culture, particularly among people of her generation, and particularly on an individual level.  Recently breaking away from large-format photography to work in less resolved time-based and performative media, the artist is shifting the function of the object or image in her practice away from being the end of an idea and towards being a conduit to experience.

In the sculptural piece Buck/Bust, the friend-collaborator from a recent wilderness trip actually becomes an object, and the object itself comes to represent him as a wild being. In the wilderness project from This is the Worst Trip…, and in Mathern’s past work with fantasy metal band Doomhawk, the collaborator becomes a medium for her own work. The object shifts from an endpoint to a passage, and the relationship enters a gray area between collaboration and objectification.
