Jason Wood presents his first solo exhibition at Crawl Space. Roots explores the disassociation between human necessities and their natural origins. Wood is engaged in both the discovery of history as a visual object as well as his own compulsive desire to bring order to his world. How do the rings of a tree speak to the history of that same tree? How do the components of one object add up to make that one thing whole? Wood dissects his materials not only to manipulate them, but also to come to an understanding of the life they lived before they were appropriated to become our generic trade materials. Roots is the artist's own discovery of this separation as well as a peeling back of history to see the life of one's materials and the future paths this life could take. For Jason Wood, learning to see is the key to understanding the fundamental disconnect between our refined human necessities and their natural origins.
