NICHOLAS BROWN – WILLIAM LAMSON

Crawl Space is pleased to present new linocut prints by Seattle artist Nicholas Brown and video by New York artist William Lamson. Though representing disparate media, the selected works from each artist are pulled from series focused on the physicality of nature and organics.

Nicholas Brown THE UNDERBRUSH SERIES The imagery I use in my current linocut prints comes from capturing the organic geometry found in the undergrowth landscape of the Northwest. I am interested in dense landscapes to force the viewer to confront their immediate surroundings and to present an overloaded image that is devoid of commercialism and instead is shouting about nature. This process creates an immediate snapshot -- a moment defined -- of the constantly changing natural environment represented. When viewed up close, the details of the scene reveal their individuality, viewed from a distance, the scene becomes a recognizable whole.

William Lamson THE FLIGHT SERIES The pursuit of flight, no matter how flawed or hopeless the attempt, places the amateur in the heroic position of trying to transcend his place on earth. This project investigates the flight endeavor as it represents both the physical desire to escape earth and the metaphysical hope to connect with the divine.
