JASON WOOD
MEMORIES AND MARQUETRY

March 17 - April 15, 2007

Crawl Space member artist Jason Wood is pleased to present his second solo exhibition Memories and Marquetry, a continued exploration of the disassociation between human necessities and their natural origins. Wood is engaged in both the discovery of history as a visual object as well as his own compulsive desire to bring order to his world. How does a hand tool or a piece of building material speak of source or history? How do the components of an object add up to make that one thing whole?

Wood examines his materials not only to manipulate them, but also to come to an understanding of the life they lived before they were appropriated to become our generic trade materials. Memories and Marquetry is a peeling back of personal and natural history to see the life of one's materials and the future paths this life could take. For the artist, learning to see is the key to understanding the fundamental disconnect between our refined human necessities and their natural origins.
