Crawl Space is proud to present "Non-non-referential Painting," an
exploration of the austere discipline of referential painting through
the work of five young artists. This framework of abstraction and
representation of source is necessary and unavoidable to each
exhibiting artist. Curated by Crawl Space member artist Bradley
Biancardi and guest artist Michele Bolinger, "Non-non-referential
Painting" intends to create a respite from the modern flood of
superfluous imagery through this collection of elemental works.
Kevin Bernstein is drawn to elements of evolution, growth and decay as innate behavioral patterns of the natural world that transcend time
and place. Similarly as his painting process evolves, a morphology of
the natural world occurs. Bradley Biancardi creates intimate
architectural spaces that may transform into vast expansions or
envelop the viewer, inviting them to explore a space that is
internalized within us all. Michelle Bolinger's paintings source
landscape for the imagery of created worlds, though this literal
reference becomes determined by her painting process and
experimentation with color. Emily Gherard seeks to comprehend the
complexity of current social themes by aligning her understanding of
them with that of her painting process. Matt Murphy offers a place in
his paintings that, when occupied, allows for an opportunity to slow
down one's comprehension of the visual world.
