ANNE MATHERN

CV(download as pdf)

Anne Mathern was born to Rita and Tom Mathern in a walled compound in Saudi Arabia, where they lived until moving to the suburbs of Atlanta, and later the suburbs of Chicago. With wholesome surroundings and experiences came the expectation for order and sensibility in dealing with the world.

Anne’s current work stems from the inconvenience of relating to people and situations that are more unpleasant than those with which she was raised. Her large-format color photographs are built on the principle that life’s joys and despairs come in waves (i.e. when it rains it pours), and that these waves are relentless. They regard unbridled emotion as fulfillment in the life experience of a rational being.

Anne lives in Seattle and has a BFA in Photography from the University of Washington. She is the Managing Director of the artist-run gallery Crawl Space. Her color photographs are captured with a 4x5 medium format land camera and are scanned for printing as archival inkjet prints. Though digital methods are used for large-scale printing, the images are not digitally manipulated.
